DescriptionThis sub-fonds consists of forty-nine National Froebel Foundation minutes books accumulated between 1874 and 1974. It documents a range of committees and subjects, the most common of which are: - Term course lectures - Holiday courses - Conferences - New teachers and staff appointments - Teachers and staff departures - Examination regulations - Accountancy Committee names changed periodically, which is reflected in item level description. Of note, some committees had short-life spans and therefore cover few years. Minute books contain appendices, such as lists of important subjects, letters, notes and lists of staff and schools. Other documents were annexed to the books, including bulletins, summer school programme ephemera, press cuttings, syllabi, teacher registries per subject and reports. A great number of books include an index regarding the important subjects of the minutes. When the indexes are used in a different purpose like the name of the members of the staff or the name of the schools, the information has been noted on the item level description. Books vary in size. Smaller books measure about 23 by 19 cm and contain between 120 and 190 pages. Medium-sized books measure from about 31 by 22 cm to about 33 by 23 cm and contain between 124 pages and 148 pages. The largest books measure from about 33 by 20 cm to 36 by 25 cm and contain between 200 and 390 pages. The average number of pages is 148. Hard covers are composed of fabric with leather in the corners and edges of the books. The books were manufactured by “Matthews, Drew and Corporation, Wholesales Stationers, Account Books Manufacturers, London.”
Physical DescriptionSome books were manufactured with thin, fragile pages that must be handled with extra care. Also, some books are over-stuffed and must be read with the assistance of book supports. Appendices and annexed documents are often loosely inserted into minute books, so care must be taken when turning pages.
