Administrative HistoryThe Whitelands Reading Guild (variously known as the General Guild, Reading Girl Guild, Study Guild and the Guild of St Ursula) was founded by students in 1879 as a means of combining the ideals of serious study and Christian friendship. The motto: 'Ora. Lege. Obedi' translates as 'Prayer. Study. Service' or 'Pray. Read. Obey'. The Guild was the focal point for alumni to keep in contact with the College. In the early 1920s the Guild officially changed its name to 'The Guild of St Ursula' and in 1971 it became the 'Whitelands College Guild'. At an early stage students purchased pendant badges on joining the Guild. They were first produced in 1884 in silver and cost one shilling and four pence (modern equivalent = c £5). Later they were also made in bronze. They appear to no longer have been produced after 1937. The Guild's first annual publication was published in 1880 and is still ongoing, now produced biannually.
