Harriet Ponsonby (nee Spencer), the wife of the 3rd Earl of Bessborough, was a Whig hostess, gambler and notorious lover. Her liaison with the Early of Granville produced two illegitimate children. Her legitimate daughter was Lady Caroline Lamb. Lovell, Mary S A Scandalous Life – the biography of Jane Digby 1996 Married first to Lord Ellenborough, their country home was Elm Grove, Roehampton. ‘Jane Digby (1807-1881) had everything: beauty, aristocratic connections, money, and a highly original mind. Said to be the most beautiful woman in Regency England, she was married at eighteen to Lord Ellenborough, their marital home was Elm Grove – now the site of Digby Stuart College. Meadows, Denis Obedient Men x 2 copies (one without jacket] 1956 ‘This remarkable book reveals something of what it means to train for membership of the Society of Jesus. Denis Meadows’ ten-year novitiate was served just before and during the First World War. The majority of this time was spent at Manresa House, now Whitelands College. The author reflects Edwardian life in Roehampton and also reflects on Gerard Manley Hopkins’ time at Manresa from 1868.’ Jacketed copy book-marked throughout. Second copy includes letter to Gilly. Bookplate: Prize for English Subjects – with letter (from Helen to Derek) making reference to this ‘The signature on Irene’s prize book was indeed “R Thunder” – the name of the Mother Superior!’ Ponsonby, Major-General Sir John The Ponsonby Family 1929 ‘This rare book contains short biographies of the Ponsonby family including the 2nd and 3rd earls of Bessborough, Harriet Ponsonby and Lady Caroline Lamb – all of whom lived at Parkstead House. The house was built for the 2nd earl circa 1762.’ This edition may have been the author’s copy.
