TitleRegister of Mistresses 1842-49
Date1842 - 1849
Extent1 volume
DescriptionIndexed, detailed version of student register recording: number, name, age, marital status, by whom certified, by whom recommended, when admitted and sent out, permanent or temporary status, where employed, and ‘Remarks’ . With space for recording observations and comments on students' ability, potential and progress, and often notes on post-college careers or circumstances for leaving College prematurely. From No. 107 onwards details are more sparse with remarks mostly (often blunt) observations about teaching prowess eg: '129 Charlotte Rolls CR – is very dull, reads badly, and spells worse – has no knowledge of grammar or geography – has no idea of a map beyond that of a painted piece of paper. She seems a good girl, and is most anxious to learn. She will never be a clever teacher. But possesses all the requisites for forming a useful one. Knowledge of scripture fair.' First entry is No 1, Elizabeth Ransom, age 16, admitted January 13th 1842. Last entry, at end of book, is No 238, Elizabeth Spaight, admitted May 1848.
