TitleBede College, Durham photos
Date1941-1945
Administrative HistoryThe College was forced to evacuate from Putney in 1940, with home-based correspondence courses utilised until alternative accommodation could be found. Second years went to Homerton College, Cambridge, while first years went to an ex-orphanage turned secondary school in Halifax. In the autumn of 1941, Whitelands was able to gather all its students in the buildings of the College of the Venerable Bede in Durham, which as a men's college had closed for the duration of the war. Space was limited and there were several hostels including one in Gilesgate. Students began returning to Putney in October 1944.
