DescriptionFile containing: • Photo album including family photos, and pictures around Seaton, Devon; Whitelands May Day 1927; snapshots labelled ‘Barbara 1925’, ‘Chapel End 1925’; snapshots of teaching colleagues, and school classes, some labelled. • Loose enclosed postcards of a school May Day showing Iris as an attendant; class photos in fancy or special occasion dress (different generations). • Photos (some mounted) of Iris as a child, as a returning May Queen, at home in middle age and in retirement. • News cuttings: 1992 40th anniversary of Cuddington Primary School; 1992 May Day with Queen Annabel; May Day features in ‘The News’ 1985, and ‘The Advertiser’ 1988, • Country Life magazine from 27 April 1989 with article ‘Ruskin’s Romantic Fancies’ by Anne Campbell Dixon pp130-133. • Iris' obituary notice from her church’s magazine. Photo album monogrammed 'IS' with snapshot and postcard photos mainly in the range 1925-31, although there are a couple from the c.1980s. Most photos are captioned. Includes images of ‘Swanick’ and ‘Queen Minnie’s School’ but mostly of Whitelands. Note that many images are missing, especially towards the end of the album. The album also contains a letter to Iris from Winifred Mercier, dated ‘May Day’. On the first page is a message ‘To Iris, with love and wishing you much happiness, from Daisy Le [Cross?], September 11, 1927’.
Administrative HistoryIris Smith (1906–1993) attended Whitelands 1925-27 and was May Queen in 1926. She began her teaching career in Liverpool. On her return to Surrey she taught in Caterham before becoming head of Ewell Infants’ School. In 1952 she opened the new Cuddington County Primary School and remained as head until her retirement in 1972. She introduced a May Day festival at Cuddington.
